About Me |
I feel a bit like a tomato: it has origins in one place; was raised in another; & now is part of many cultures. So much so, it becomes difficult to remember where it derives from. While I can not claim to be as cultured as the tomato, I enjoy the journey all the same; living, loving, and hugging a few trees. I enjoy nature, adventure and pursuing my passions. Favourite places that taught me lessons: a year in Haiti working with rural education; research in Thailand; time with the United Nations in Kenya & other places that served as ‘home’ – Malmö, Sweden; Seattle, USA & Budapest, Hungary to name a few. While locations have changed, the focus remains the same: a desire to work with the complex challenges facing our planet and its peoples.
I believe education to be a crucial tool, helping us build competencies, confidence, and importantly, humility and connection to our local and global communities. I am also a nerd and love learning. I have a degree in International Development from U. Washington (Seattle) and a Master in Environmental Science, Policy and Management jointly-offered by four universities: Lund (Sweden), Central European University (Hungary), Manchester (UK) and University of the Aegean (Greece). Learning about environmental challenges from global professors and classmates, in varying European and global cities, has provided a living dimension to my education: demonstrating environmental strategies are highly vulnerable to the context in which implemented.
Currently I work for the City of Malmö’s Environment Department. Malmö aims to ‘make sustainability reality’ engaging both politicians and its citizens. In some 20 years it has significantly lowered its GHG emissions, whilst improving quality of life, features a 100% renewable energy district, biogas buses running on food waste, a drastic rise in bicycling, a food-climate policy, a focus on Cleantech business development, renewable energy investments, education for sustainable development and ‘greening’ city festivals to state a few. Through this and related cases, I have become a practical optimistic: certainly, the complexities to address climate change and related issues are immense – scientifically and politically. But so is the growing momentum from a diverse spectrum of actors. If COP15 was anything for me that was it: we are a globally-minded, conscious and thinking generation. Many challenges remain, but what an opportunity to get engaged in positive change.
