About me
James Bradfield Moody is currently the CEO of Space and Environment Technologies, an engineering and investment firm. In this role he undertakes work with major engineering companies and the spatial information sector, focussing on areas of interoperability and data use for environmental outcomes.
James was formerly the Managing Director of Natural Resource Intelligence (NRI), Australia’s first publicly listed Environmental Spatial Information company. NRI provides environmental, social and economic intelligence to assist organisations in monitoring and evaluating land and natural resources to meet their business and environmental objectives. NRI applies a combination of remotely sensed data, site data and expertise to generate highly detailed resource information.
In the last five years James Moody has been heavily involved with the United Nations, and from 2000 to 2002 was co-chair and Australian representative of the 40 strong youth advisory council to the UN Environment Program (UNEP). This council consists of young people from all around the world working to advise the United Nations on environmental affairs. In this role he has worked on issues such as sustainable consumption and cleaner production, and is a firm advocate of the role that engineers and scientists can play towards sustainability. James was also a member of the Science and Technology delegation to the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002, is a member and executive secretary of the taskforce on Science and Technology for the Millennium Development Goals and was invited to attend the World Economic Forum as a Global Leader of Tomorrow in 2003.
The application of engineering to space activities has been another of James’ passions. James was also the systems manager for FedSat, the first Australian Satellite to be launched in thirty years. Funded by the Cooperative Research Centre for Satellite Systems, this satellite is hoped to be a catalyst for Australia's re-entry into the space arena and is hoped to pave the way for other future endeavours.
James is also a PhD candidate at the National Graduate School of Management, undertaking research on the applications of Complex Product Systems to the international and Australian satellite industries. Complex Product Systems are high-cost, complicated systems which embody a large number of customised, interacting sub-assemblies and components.
In 2000, James was named Young Professional Engineer of the Year. While holding this title he promoted the engineering profession and his particular brand of ‘socially conscious engineering’. In 2000 James was also awarded Young Queenslander of the Year and in 2001 was awarded Young Australian of the Year in Science and Technology.
James is passionate about the supporting role that young socially conscious businesspeople can play in society. He actively works towards communicating these views to the general community and makes regular appearances at industry conferences, schools and other events. James is also a panel member of the ABC Television show “The New Inventors”. He believes that issues such as sustainability and environmental management are only going to become more important in society.
