About Me |
ICYE (the Inter Cultural Youth Exchange) was established in 1949 as an exchange programme between churches in Germany and the United States in an attempt to create bridges between the two countries after World War II.
In the 1960s several other European countries joined the network and the focus shifted from short-term to long-term exchange programmes.
Expansion of the ICYE network continued in the 1980s and 1990s with the development of a secular rather than ecumenical focus. Nowadays ICYE is a worldwide federation of 34 national organisations spread across the globe (14 in Europe, 6 in Latin America, 6 in Africa, 6 in Asia and 1 in Australasia).
ICYE has consultative status with UNESCO and has been recognised as an International Peace Messenger by the United Nations General Assembly.
ICYE-UK was established in 1993, and is a UK registered charity. It maintains a small staff base to keep overhead costs low. The work of the organisation is overseen by a Board of Trustees who are democratically elected by former volunteers.
Over the last few years ICYE-UK, in partnership with a number of other organisations in the ICYE network, have developed diverse projects in a variety of social contexts.
