Emily was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. Her father was Robert (Bob) Hunter, co-founder of Greenpeace, first president of Greenpeace for the first seven years and leading Canadian environmentalist. Her mother, Roberta (Bobbi) Hunter, also a co-founder of Greenpeace, the first Greenpeace treasurer and first women in front of a harpoon to save a whale. Robert had two children from a previous marriage, Conan Hunter, a computer engineer for the Canadian government and Justine Hunter, a political journalist for the Vancouver Sun. When Robert married Roberta, they had two children as well, Will Hunter, a Communications Advisor to the Liberal Caucus of Ontario, Canada and Emily being the youngest four.
Emily move to Toronto with her parents and her brother Will at the age of three years old. There her father became the renowned City TV Environmental Reporter and host of a series of shows, such as Hunter’s Gatherings and Paper Cuts. Emily went through a series of primary and secondary institutes having difficulty learning. But later on, by the time she graduated from the secondary educational level, she was on the honor roll and was given a scholars medal. In her secondary education, she was also able to take part in numerous educational traveling opportunities. Such as at age 17, she took part in a student exchange program to Japan for 6 months. There she learned intermediate Japanese and many of the Japanese customs while living with a host family and attending a Japanese speaking high-school. After her graduation, she switched roles from being a student and became a teacher in Guangzhou, China after completing her ESL training. There she taught college level English as a second language for 6 months. Afterwards, she spent the remainder of a year abroad backpacking in Thailand and joining her first environmental campaign with a group called the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. With this group, she sailed to the Galapagos Islands and helped with conservation on the islands and with stopping three illegal fishing vessels. It was at this time that Emily realized that she wanted to devote her life’s work to environmental education and advocacy. She later went on City TV Toronto, a news station in Toronto, Canada, and talked about Galapagos conservation publicly.
However, in spring 2004, Emily received the news that her father was dyeing from cancer. In the time they had left, Emily spent much time with her father, conversing and assisting in his health. They had hoped for a cure with alternative medicine in Mexico. But a year later, in May 2005, Emily’s father passed away. This was a difficult time for Emily. But she slowly picked up the pieces of her life and helped the rest of her family do the same in the years to come. Over the coming years Emily joined several other Sea Shepherd campaigns, campaigns to help stop the illegal killing of whales in Antarctica. She joined the ships in the winter of 2006 and 2007. In these campaigns she was a volunteer videographer and worked with the media to get the story covered in Canada. She would later work with such media outlets as City TV Toronto, CTV National and MTV Canada to discuss publicly the issue of whaling in Antarctica and with whom her footage was broadcasted. It was at this time that she realized the power of media to both educate and inspire the public about important issues the public needs to know about and knew that environmental journalism would be her focus.
Emily is currently completing her degree in Journalism at the University of Toronto, Canada. She works with numerous environmental organizations, such as the Toronto Vegetarian Association, The Bob Hunter Foundation, the Canadian Youth Climate Coalition, Earthroots and Sea Shepherd. Emily speaks out publicly about environmental issues both with the media and in public presentations, such as with secondary and post-secondary institutes. And she is working on a book to inspire young women, and a book on youth environmental activism, as well as a documentary on whaling
