About Me

From June until August 2011, I will be volunteering in Tanzania with Youth Challenge International (YCI). YCI is a leading global youth development organization that promotes youth innovation to drive positive change. YCI’s programs are designed to meet the needs of youth affected by poverty through three integrated sectors: youth livelihoods, youth health and youth leadership. YCI accomplishes these objectives by engaging youth ages 18 to 30 in overseas volunteer projects. They provide youth with the opportunity to live and work on community-based projects in Costa Rica, Guyana, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Vanuatu, Ghana, Tanzania and Kenya.

While in Tanzania, I will have the opportunity to develop personal and professional skills while contributing to youth development programming. As a YCI volunteer, I will work closely with local community members, partner organizations and local youth to implement programs related to sexual reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, literacy, environmental awareness and human rights.

I will working with YCI’s partner organization in Zanzibar, Tanzania, The Zanzibar Non-Governmental Organization Cluster (ZANGOC) which is a collaborative of non-profit organizations in Zanzibar committed to the goals that YCI works towards.

However, in order to participate, I am required to fundraise $3700 for YCI’s global youth development programs. I am also responsible for the travel costs to and from Tanzania, as well as the costs of personal equipment, vaccinations and other expenses associated with volunteering overseas.

When I finish my program with YCI in Zanzibar, I will be traveling to Nyakibale, Uganda to work with the Global Emergency Care Collaborative. To learn more about the GECC, you can visit http://www.globalemergencycare.org/
