About Me   About Me

My name is Hauwa Ashley Umar. I am an indigene of Taraba State, Nigeria. I attended the Federal government Girls College (FGGC) Yola in Adamawa State from 1988 to 1993; I then attended and graduated from the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria with Bachelors Degree in Geography in 1999. I also acquired a Diploma in Foundation to Computer Programming from Debis Computer Professional Institute, Abuja in 2001 and a Post Graduate Diploma in Environmental Management from the Bayero University Kano (BUK). I am currently a Post Graduate Student of Masters in Development Studies in Bayero University Kano. While my educational background relates to human and physical dynamics for maximum spatial interaction, it is also to a great extent geared towards understanding social phenomena and social facts with the aim of using participatory approach to finding solutions.

I have worked with the Joint Services Management Board (JSMB), which comprises of four Project Implementing Partners (BASICS, CEDPA, FHI and JHU/PCC) of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), under the team leadership of Basic Support for Institutionalizing Child Survival (BASICS/II) Nigeria, Kano Field Office, as the Consultant Secretary.

I have also worked with the Center for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA)/Nigeria - Abuja Project Office, a Democracy and Governance, Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC), Reproductive Health and Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV/AIDS (PMTCT) Initiative Programs, also a United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funded project with offices in Abuja, Lagos and Kano and with projects in Abuja, Bauchi, Benue, Enugu, Gombe, Kano, Lagos and Plateau states, in various capacities including being the Secretary and Administrative/Logistics Assistant. I was involved in the office system set up of the Partnership for Advocacy and Civic empowerment (PACE) project – a $5.5 million, two year civil society assistance program with consortium partners of CEDPA, IDASA and IHLG, and I have been able to accustom myself with all the outlined responsibilities, which include update and maintenance of administrative and program files – electronic and hard copies and project filing, assist with the logistics for meetings, seminars, conferences and workshops for capacity building, increase in public awareness and advocacy . I am also assigned with the some financial projects and assignment like maintenance of the office petty cash within the CEDPA Nigeria petty cash expense regulation, processing all CEDPA bills.

I worked with WaterAid Nigeria as the Secretary (Consultant) in the Country office Abuja. WaterAid is an UK International NGO dedicated exclusively to the provision of safe domestic water, sanitation and hygiene education to the poorest people in the world. WaterAid helps local organizations and institutions to set up and manage low cost, sustainable projects using appropriate technology. WaterAid currently supports projects in Bauchi, Benue, Plateau, Jigawa, Ekiti and Enugu states, Nigeria.

I am currently working as the Administrative Assistant, Program Management (Program Assistant) with Family Health International in the Global HIV/AIDS Initiative Nigeria (GHAIN) Project - a five-year partnership between the governments of Nigeria and the United States of America made up of a consortium of seven partners: AXIOS Foundation, Centre for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA), Family Health International (FHI) , German Leprosy Relief Association (GLRA), Howard University, Nigeria Red Cross Society/American Red Cross and the FUTURES Group International. Under the United States President’s Emergency Plan (PEPFAR) - in which the USG is investing $193 Million dollars on HIV/AIDS and TB prevention, care and treatment in Nigeria, over the period of 5 years, FHI and its partners in GHAIN are targeting a wide range of services for strengthening and scaling up activities including: Capacity building of local implementing agencies; Primary prevention through promotion of abstinence and faithfulness; Voluntary counselling and testing (VCT); Prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT); Clinical care including antiretroviral therapy (ART); Prevention and treatment of tuberculosis (TB) and other opportunistic infections (Ols); Treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs); Primary prevention targeting most at risk populations (MARP), youth and people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA); Support for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) and; Home based care (HBC)

GHAIN is providing comprehensive services in six states (known as saturation states); Anambra, Cross River, Edo, FCT, Kano and Lagos. The non-comprehensive site is in Bauchi State where only community mobilization interventions takes place.

In addition, working with USAID implementing partners and WaterAid have given me the opportunity to acquaint myself with program activities vis-à-vis principles, techniques and tools of Participatory Local Action (PLA) in identifying the expressed/felt needs of groups and how to use it in designing programs geared toward solving identified problems and using participatory tools to asses impact of program intervention as well as adopting Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation (PME) approach. I am familiar with the use of different Management Information System (MIS) strategy which includes the modalities/assessment processes that are used for the selection of sub-project grantees using organization assessment process (capability assessment). Building upon the strength and weakness of the selected partners through training and documentation of their activities e.g. through a start up workshop, proposal development. I am also familiar with the basic M&E process especially process monitoring of activities by going to the field to look at their activities then compare it with their proposal and provide technical assistance where need be. I have developed the ability to involve in report writing, which entails critical assessment of program activities carried out in relation to the specific objectives, as well as the achievements /accomplishments, constraints and the way forward and training on development issues.
