Historically, development work has suffered from a lack of cooperation between the different professions. All too often economists, engineers, doctors and educators work separately, and sometimes even at cross-purposes. This piecemeal approach to development has been less than successful, largely resulting in short-term panaceas rather than sustainable long-term solutions We believe that sharing expertise across disciplines is a more effective and sustainble approach to international development. To innovate and lead in this multidisciplinary approach, we conduct the following activities: We compile resources on the values and techniques of working across disciplines, and we make these resources available as policy papers, toolkits, how-to guides, and best practices. We create new in-house projects based on the principle of multidisciplinarity, to prove the efficacy of our innovative approach to development. We consult for other organizations to help them improve their own projects, using our multidisciplinary models, tools, and connections. We build a community of practitioners, experts, and enthusiasts across disciplines. Currently we have two projects: Global Potential and GlobalVote. Global Potential is a fresh approach to youth development, providing low-income minority Brooklyn youth with mentoring, job skills, and the opportunity to volunteer abroad in a developing world community. http://www.global-potential.org Global Vote is an internet-based democratic tool that uses shadow voting to comment on the policy decisions of international organizations and to advocate for fair representation. http://www.theglobalvote.org
