About Me   About Me
Since the age of 9, I've always enjoyed art...either viewing other's works or expressing myself with art. I worked with many mediums throughout the years but currnetly have a great passion for acrylics. Coming from a relatively poor background, I did not have the opportunity to buy art materials needed to master a "true" rendering of an oil painting so my first oil painting at the age of 18 was of a horse's head using left over paints and brushes from my roommate's paint-by-number set. I used her two completed paint-by-number portraits of horse's heads as inspiration for my first oil painting. The result was astounding, at least to my 18 year old eyes and the eyes of my peers. This gave me the encouragement to scrimp and save until I could obtain a full set of oils and away I painted and have been ever since, changing my mediums periodically. Each medium has their advantages but I love working with acrylics because clean-up is so very easy and the fast drying of the paint is another feature I love. Not having formal training in art may have led to many ruined brushes using oils in my early years. I truly believe that everyone has artistic talents; that everyone can render a piece of art. I believe it's just the "desire" that separates us. Some of us have a much stronger desire to express ourselves in an artistic way, be it dance, sculpture, glass blowing, or painting, etc. I think everyone "can" but some just don't really "want" to take up a brush and canvas and actually paint. Some have suggested I was just born with "it". Yes, I agree I was born with the "desire" but all of us can be taught in the world of art and achieve great accomplishments. Speaking of accomplishments, one of my proudest is having my work displayed in the Evansville, IN Civic Center 1979 through 1982. As far as can be determined, no other artist has enjoyed that achievement. Today, a new building stands on the site and prints from the Old Master's abound throughout the complex. Since I mentioned the Old Masters, Monet is probably my favorite but my most favorite artists are some of the "yet unknowns". Judging contests and just viewing the artwork of our youths of today amazes me and I marvel at how much talent there is in the world today. Some are exceptional. It's sad that most will never be famous for their great talents BUT art is not usually appreicated in the artist's day and time. Remember that Van Gogh sold only one painting in his entire lifetime! I try to never lose sight of the fact that because of this, it gave him the freedom to work innovatively in combining a variety of genres. Throughout the years, it has been suggested that I develop a "style" and hone into one particular area. No way! I am very proud that I am so versatile in my paintings. Most of my earlier work was Traditional and I still enjoy that type of painting today but when I ventured into Impressionism, I felt "at home". Another method is the freedom of Abstracts. There's literally no end to expressing imagination using Abstracts. One technique I've developed recently and having a great degree of sucess is using cans of spray paint. No, not air brush but spray paints. It's opened up a whole new field for me and I thoroughly enjoy the different effects that can be achieved with sprays but one has to be careful what materials are sprayed. I was born in Southern IL, near a little town called Eldorado and after graduating highschool there, went on to college at Evansville, IN and lived and worked there for many years. I now reside in the county of Henderson, KY and am inspired every day by the view from the deck at the back of my house. I'm thrilled that I happened onto this TakingITGlobal site and am impressed with their profile and am looking forward to being a part of the group.
