Gemma Givens is of Cakchiquel Mayan and Yaqui from Santiago Sacatepequez, Guatemala. A former intern for the International Forum on Globalization in San Francisco, Gemma focuses on indigenous peoples’ rights in the international human rights framework. At the 2009 Indigenous Peoples’ Global Summit on Climate Change in Anchorage, Alaska she attended as a youth documentarian. This past December, Gemma represented SustainUS: the US Youth Network for Sustainable Development, and the Indigenous Environmental Network at the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. A graduate of the American Indian Journalism Institute at the University of South Dakota, Gemma now works for the Santa Cruz Sentinel. She is a student at the University of California at Santa Cruz
