Confidence, positive attitude, self-esteem; these terms are the key of success and happiness. However, if people don’t believe in them, these values have no meaning. Self-esteem’s problem is mostly related to teenagers or people with a mental health disorder who let criticisms affect their mind. « You must love yourself before you love another. » This anonymous quote defines perfectly the basis of self-esteem, which is the knowledge of your strengths, your weaknesses, your limits and your needs. Then, you could accept yourself and love who you truly are.
Where does this self-esteem issue come from? Well, teenagers who look or feel different are laughed at and judged by the other kids at school. The feeling of rejection can cause any teenager’s lack of confidence. Indeed, as a weed in the middle of a field of tulips, you feel like you don’t belong here. Also, the education that a teenager received from their parents influences his self-esteem. In fact, the relation between the child and his parents directly affects his self-development, because if he has been criticized and discouraged by his parents, the kid will grow with this negative attitude towards himself.
Some people neglect the importance of having a good self-esteem. Perhaps, someone with a lack of self-esteem have a harder time reaching his goal. In fact, he thinks he doesn’t deserve any success. A person struggling with this issue makes more criticisms to himself and gets discouraged easily.
There are a lot of organizations that can help improving your self-esteem, such as the Dove Movement. This organization has been created to support girls and women, to make them realize what their personal potential is and to help them feel good with their own beauty. In fact, the Dove Movement is based on the idea of a world where each woman would be able to inspire younger girls. At first, this movement has been built up to counter beauty’s pressures face every day by young girls. Also, some specialists in this organization showed that, everyday, more than 70% of girls all around the world refrain to participate in activities such as sharing an opinion or attending a social event because of low self-esteem. So, to help this situation, the Dove Movement created a website where you can chat with other girls and share your personal experiences with self-esteem. This movement also organized, last October 22, a self-esteem weekend. The idea was to regroup as many girls and women as possible to talk about self-esteem, to send a message of encouragement to someone you love or to participate in group activities to improve your self-esteem in a warm atmosphere.
Finally, a lack of self-esteem could be an obstacle to your goal, but an over self-esteem can also be a problem of arrogance. So, you have to find the perfect balance between the under and the over confidence to have a good self-esteem.
