About Me |
Crystal Walters, English and Linguistics Student at Memorial University of Newfoundland.
I believe everyone should be given equal opportunities to grow. I'm an advocate for literacy at my University and especially concerned with the rights of immigrants. I'm also an advocate for Oxfam and HIV/AIDS and support new healthcare initiatives in developing world countries. In 2003 I was glad to meet Nikki Rideout poster girl for the Agape Children's Home for HIV/Aids. This experience showed me the importance of drive not just in charity but everyday. I hope to see awareness raised about this disease and that people living with HIV and AIDS will see positive changes in their lives. I've also volunteered with the Canadian Cancer Society, the Arithritis Society, the Diabetes Association, Ability Employment Corporation and the Student Volunteer Bureau.
Personally, I'm a linguist (updated profile on the Linguist List coming soon), singer and have some experiences in acting. I've been singing and making music ( piano, omichord, acoustic guitar) with my sister at charity events, concerts, weddings since the age of 11. Our sound is a mix of folk / jazz/ acoustic. As actress I've won awards from Dr. Donna Butt, Rising Tide Theatre, Trinity, NL. Although some days I wonder if I should have pursued acting (since Ryerson school seems to like Newfoundlanders- check out Kate Corbett in "Family Biz") I realize what I love about academics is the amazing scholars you meet and the networking possibilities with those you could never have met."Go live your life, hey, hey, hey, hey"-- quoting Rihanna here because I really respect and admire the energy and enthusiasm of the bahamian people I have met in my life.
Thanks and Good Day.
