About Me |
Celestin, an Intern Doctor K&B Teaching Hospitals 2011. He's been volunteering in Rwanda Village Concept Project (www.rwanda-vcp.org) especially in HIV/AIDS awareness, Reproductive health and Family Planning Program as the Secretary in 2007 and Director later. Rwanda Village Concept Project is a multidisciplinary, intersectorial, Non-governmental, Nonprofit making, Voluntary student run organization aims to improve the health and living standards in underprivileged communities in the Southern Province of Rwanda and capacity building of participating students. It is split into five programs including HIV/AIDS awareness, Reproductive Health and Family Planning.
He is experienced in Peer Education and has been working with youth especially non schooling youth in rural areas since 2005 raising awareness of the youth (Youth are at the greatest risk of contracting HIV and prevention is key to stemming the spread of HIV) on HIV/AIDS, Sexual Transmitted Infections and Family planning and advocating for poverty reduction among the youth. He helped create both the youth association called Anti-HIV/AIDS Clubs and Income generating projects providing a forum through which the youth can continue their discussion of HIV/AIDS issues, as well as the opportunity to offer one another valuable support and advice. Not only will this keep the group active and together, but it will also prevent them from turning to illegal and potentially dangerous means of generating income, such as prostitution. The income created will be a lifeline to vulnerable members of the community, especially orphans and families affected by HIV/AIDS as sufferers often become either too depressed or too weak to work, and many experience increased financial hardship as a result. Additionally Celestin has organized and celebrated with youth in the clubs many events, World AIDS Day and International Candlelight Memorial among others.
He is the UNICEF-Rural Voices of Youth Country Representative. UNICEF-RVOY (http://www.unicef.org/voy/index.php) links young people from rural areas in different countries, who do not have access to internet, to explore, speak out and take action on global issues that are important to them in order to create a world fit for children.
Celestin has attended different national and international events such as IAC 2008; HIV Pathogenesis X7 held in Canada; Social disparities at Jefferson, Philadelphia, US; overcoming the crisis of TB and AIDS 2009, etc. He also participated in Fellows and New Investigators Workshop on Grantmanship and Career Research Opportunities in HIV and AIDS Research and in the conference on HIV Pathogenesis and HIV Vaccine trials held in Canada March-April, 2008. He also participated and helped organize the East African Medical and Pharmaceutical Students (EAMPS) international Conference: “The role of Future Healthcare professionals in the acceleration of HIV/AIDS control " held at national University of Rwanda (NUR), South, Rwanda on December 2007.
He has participated in different trainings namely Teaching methodology by VSO; Counseling by International ADULLAM Foundation; Posttraumatic Stress Disorders by MMHA in partnership with IMCC; Lobby, Advocacy, Fund raising especially in Rwanda and Budget by ODP/MEDSAR and IMCC Denmark, Project management by GYCA, Proposal writing and Research methodologies by UK Conservative Volunteers, leadership, peer education in HIV/AIDS and Reproductive health, etc.
