“As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest ... Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings.

Sometimes it falls upon a generation to be great. You can be that great generation. Of course the task will not be easy. But not to do this would be a crime against humanity, against which I ask all humanity now to rise up.”
- Nelson Mandela

Three or four years ago, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I was only 13 or 14, but even then, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. But I know one thing had affected me. Injustice, and little did I know it, but its scale was, and continues to be, huge. September 11 had, like most people in the world, had affected me deeply, even though I am not an American. But it was not terrorism, as evil as it is, that made me think about the world as a whole. It was the 30,000 children dying each day from preventable and treatable causes. It was this injustice that got me questioning and asking why.

I don’t claim to know all the answers. I don’t even claim to know what the majority of the world experiences when they live in poverty. But I do claim that injustice on this scale has to, and must be, stopped. Humanity doesn’t have a choice. Go to the past, and it was slavery that had to be abolished. Now it is our turn. As cliché as it is, something needs to change. Sure, I’d call myself ideological, but it isn’t a bad thing. For something to be done, maybe some people still have to have faith in humanity and its ability to change things for the better.

Currently, I am doing periodic volunteer work for The Oaktree Foundation, as well as studying and completing my final year of school. Organisations I have previously been involved with include:
- Oxfam’s International Youth Parliament (Secretariat)
- World Vision Australia
- Vision Generation (as part of World Vision)

At the end of this year, I am taking part in an event called MilesPerHour, a convergence of young people in Melbourne, Australia, to coincide with the G20 Conference, to take makepovertyhistory message straight to the G20. The event will peak with the make Poverty History Concert, being held at the Myer Music Bowl, on November 17th, with the G20 happening the following 2 days.
