About Me |
Anna Rose, 24, founded the Australian Youth Climate Coalition in November 2006. The coalition unites a diversity of youth organisations to mobilise their generation in the struggle for climate justice and a clean energy future. A final year Arts/ Law student at the University of Sydney holding the University Scholarship with Distinction, Anna was a National Organiser for the National Union of Students in 2005 and is past National Convenor of the Australian Student Environment Network. She is a former editor of the Sydney University student paper Honi Soit, member of the United Nations Pacific Youth Environment Network, Sustainability Team Leader for Project Australia, and holds training sessions for young climate activists. Anna is a regular speaker and writer on environmental issues at forums such as Vibewire’s e-festival of ideas, the This Is Not Art festival, and the ‘Students of Sustainability’ Conferences. Anna has a strong belief in social justice and 2006 co-produced a short documentary on Afghani asylum seekers in Indonesia. In 2005 Anna was a youth representative to the Kyoto Protocol negotiations in Montreal. This inspired her to take her climate activism to the international arena. She is a contributing editor to the website ItsGettingHotinHere.org- Dispatches from the Global Youth Climate Movement, and is part of a network of young climate leaders worldwide. Last summer she completed a clerkship in the climate change practice group of the law firm Baker & McKenzie, and is now studying on exchange at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. She is the recipient of a Global Youth Action fellowship from the International Youth Foundation for 2007-8. In September 2007 Anna one of a delegation of five young people from around the world attending the high-level UN meeting on Climate Change at the UN General Assembly convened by Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Most recently, she was a panellist at the Power Shift 2007, a conference of 6000 student and youth on climate change in Washington DC. Anna is currently working with young leaders from student and youth climate organisations in other countries to investigate the possibility of establishing a global network of these grassroots groups.
