About me
Having been brought up in Dandora, one of Kenya’s most famous slums, I must attest that it has not been a smooth ride for me. My name is Samuel Ouma, the last born in a family of twelve.
Growing up I was surrounded by all forms of social vices such as crime, drug abuse, alcoholism just to mention a few. However, through God’s grace I managed to take a different direction with my life unlike some of my peers.
Soccer being one of my hobbies, I spent most of my time when out of school at the soccer field. This helped me use my free time to do something constructive.
On finishing High School and lacking fees to take me to University, I joined a CBO (Dandora Creative Youth) as a volunteer. Through this organization I was able to join Nairobits School of Web and Graphic Design where I got all the skill I possess now.
My dream is to inspire and empower other youths from Dandora to make a better life for themselves and their families just as I have. I would like to start programs that will educate them and empower them with relevant educative and life skills to help them convert Dandora into a productive industrial town and also a safe haven for all its habitats’.
Currently, I am working as Digital Designer at Ogilvy & Mather.
I am also giving back to my community through volunteering at:-
1. Spur Afrika- an organization that equips people on personal development skills
2. Kaplet- an organization whose aim is to teach the community on Civic education
I am also a role model for many youths in my society as I encourage them to work hard to improve their lives and also use my life experiences to motivate them.
I get inspiration from some of my role models such as; Samuel Etoo who is also my namesake, Wilson Masaka, Juliani, Dennis Oliech etc. who despite their poor backgrounds’, they have managed to beat all odds and rise to the occasion by changing their society.
